Wondering what yoga therapy is all about?

Yoga Therapy:

The credentialed profession using the entire scope of Yoga to improve people’s physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing.

Yoga Therapy is the professional therapeutic application of yoga.

Does that clear it up? Yeah, we didn’t think so. Let us try again.

  • A yoga therapist uses the full scope of yoga’s offerings. Here at SUNLIGHT that’s our founder, Rebecca Sebastian. She blends philosophy, asana (movement), meditation, relaxation, living principles, self-reflection, and more to aid in a person’s health and well-being.

  • Yoga therapy happens one-on-one or in a very small group. So it is always just for you. The whole goal is to design a yoga practice that is just right for you. No worrying about if you can or can’t do something. That helps you work on your personal goals, which will help you feel better in your mind and happier in your body…which helps you feel a sense of meaning and purpose.

  • Yoga therapy leaves you with actions you can take at home. You will leave with 3-5 items that you can do daily to create change and lead you closer to your goals.

Let’s ask this:

Has your doctor, alternative health practitioner, mom, uncle, bestie, grocery store clerk, or other person recommended that you “try yoga” to help with a challenge you are experiencing?

Yeah, that’s happened to us, too (Read Rebecca’s story). So what happens? You do a quick internet search of “yoga near me”.

That brings up a whole host of yoga classes and studios, and over time, through a lot of trial and error, you may find a great fit…but likely not.

Do you have autoimmune challenges? A hot studio probably isn’t going to be recommended. Same for folks with heart conditions, respiratory issues, and more.

So check with your doctor to make sure you are finding the right yoga space. Their likely advice?

“Find an accessible yoga studio with classes that help calm your nervous system and get your body moving safely”.

Guess what? That’s us at Sunlight. And if you want to really use yoga and all of its offerings to your benefit, then what you are really looking for is yoga therapy. And at Sunlight, we have the Quad Cities’ first International Association of Yoga Certified Therapist (C-IAYT) yoga therapist.
